An ode to an anonymous plaque of rough wood with a cartoon dog crudely shellacked onto its surface, found at a thrift-store in Jasper, Alabama in the early 1990s. It hung on the wall from a brass ring in the studio for years and just quietly doubted; the human condition on the face of a dog in the pre-prozac era…eventually becoming the inspiration behind 400 Lonely Things.

Like the thrift-store find, this album is a musty orphan with abandonment issues; and under a thick layer of dusty varnish and cobwebs is a lost dog looking for a home. The eighteen tracks comprising this first album are typical of the 400 Lonely Things method: blurry minor-chord structures, nostalgic sampling, infrequent but hypnotic percussion and woozy loops that quietly drift in and out of sometimes comforting, sometimes disturbing collages. Material for this album was originally recorded between 1988 and 2003, although “Citizens Band” contains CB radio field recordings from the mid 1970’s.

Every single track on this album was completely remixed by 400 Lonely Things in 2007. It was re-mastered by Mark Dann in 2008.  This self-titled album was originally released in a numbered vinyl edition only on the (now defunct) Bronson Unlimited label in June of 2003. This is its first digital appearance.

400 Lonely Things is Craig Varian and Jonathan McCall.

Reviews:

The music is generally sedate and chill: laid-back, one could say. It is perfect for a quiet afternoon’s reading or wine sipping, particularly if the weather is drizzly. The pieces are generally quite concise and the album moves easily from moment to moment and place to place; the fluidity of its progression is quite impressive.” - Heathen Harvest, issue 76.  Read the entire review here.
