Call It What You Want is the debut album by Hawaiian Garbage, aka Jim Killebrew.  He used to live in Hawaii, but limped on back to the mainland (most folks do, you know). Jim lives in Southern Appalachia now.

Hawaiian Garbage is experimental music without pretense.  There are no lofty artistic goals or cold methodology to be found here. Indeed, there’s a homey kind of warmth that’s more like listening to answering machines and creaky doors and $3 ukeleles for those special qualities and then playing around with them until they sound done.  It’s fun, it’s playful and it’s extremely colorful, like a kid’s show - in fact, Jim’s two young sons make a number of musical contributions.

But just when you think you’ve got this album figured out - you discover that it’s also ambient, and where many artists make horrific or dreamy landscapes with their ambiance - Hawaiian Garbage is much more science-fictiony.  Indeed, the track “The Horse Is Already Out of the Barn” has that distinct driving pulsation of early 80’s John Carpenter movies- while tracks like “Anaeroarer” and “Highwire to Rigel” are  spacious, trippy and cerebral. Where others go dark or light, Hawaiian Garbage goes weird - and you’ll have a fun time if you go along.
