Larry Marotta Curating Monthly Concert Series in Columbus, OH
Saturday, October 11th, 2008This just in from Larry Marotta:
“The OSU Urban Arts Space has asked me to curate a monthly concert series which is kicking off next Thursday, October 16. They’re giving me a six-month trial run, so I’m trying to get out as many people as possible for these shows. The series is called The Marotta Hour (note: I did not name it, in case you’re wondering if my head has gotten too large). It’s an after-work series that will run from 6:30-8 p.m. the third Thursday of each month, so don’t worry about having to stay out late. The emphasis will be on contemporary music — new and experimental sounds from cutting-edge local and national cutting-edge musicians.
The series is starting off with one of my favorite musicians, fluxmonkey (aka Bob Drake) from Cleveland, OH. He performs on homemade electronics – large, fascinating instruments covered with knobs, levers, wires, and lights. You can find out more about fluxmonkey at the website here or at the fluxmonkey myspace page here
So, the line-up for Thursday, October 16, 6:30-8 p.m.:
fluxmonkey (electronics) with J-Guy Laughlin (drums)
Larry Marotta (me, on acoustic guitar) and Ryan Jewell (percussion) duo
This is not an “arrive fashionably late” sort of show. The music will be over at 8 p.m. when the gallery closes.
The OSU Urban Arts Space is located in downtown Columbus in the former Lazarus Building at 50 W. Town Street. Their phone is (614) 292-8861. Admission is a suggested $5-$10 donation.
The gallery has a deal with Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails on Gay Street, who will be offering a special drink for people attending the performance. Don’t know the full deal on that one, so you’ll have to ask.
Larry”
